Here is a guide that will help you prepare for your study abroad program.
Before Applying
- Attend an Information Session. Our next Info Sessions are posted on our Facebook page under the Events tab.
- Research program options
- Meet with your Academic Advisor
- Meet with a Financial Aid Advisor
- Explore funding
- Meet with a Study Abroad Peer Advisor
- Apply for a passport
- If international student, meet with an International Programs Advisor
- General Application
- Create an online account using your UTEP login credentials
- Complete UTEP requirements for approval to study abroad
- Ask for 2 academic references
- Complete application forms on the Study Abroad Portal, including unofficial transcript and essay if required
- Confirm and pay $75 application fee
- Apply for scholarships. Our next scholarships and Gilman scholarships are posted on our Facebook page under the Events tab.
- For Third-Party Programs
- Contact the Study Abroad Office as soon as your application materials are complete
- Once the Study Abroad Office has approved your application, apply directly with third-party
- For Exchange Programs
- All exchange applications will be reviewed after the application deadline. Decisions should be made within two weeks
- If selected to participate in an exchange program, apply directly with host institution
- For Faculty-Led Programs
- Contact the faculty leader
Before Going Abroad
- Complete course equivalency form
- Attend a course equivalency workshop. Our next course equivalency workshops are posted on our Facebook page under the Events tab.
- Get descriptions/syllabus of the courses your intent to take at the host institution
- Obtain Chair approval
- Obtain your Academic Advisor’s signature
- Obtain your Associate Dean's signature
- Apply for your visa, if required
- Purchase your flight
- Make sure you meet with your doctor
- Ensure you have all routine vaccinations up-to-date
- Learn what other vaccinations are required for your host country
- Attend pre-departure sessions
- Complete all enrollment forms on your Miners Abroad Portal
- Complete all requirements of third-party providers or exchange programs (ex. housing, classes)
- Attend one-on-one session with Study Abroad Advisor
- If you require special accommodations, communicate with your program and Center for Accommodations and Support Services
- Meet with Financial Aid Advisor
- Complete your budget worksheet
- Make your payments on time
- For financial aid, scholarships and immigration status, make sure you are registered for study abroad class at UTEP
- Communicate to your bank and phone company
- Make copies of important documents
- Apply for your International ID student card
- Look at packing lists and tips
- Continue to learn about your host country and follow current events
- Make arrangements for taxes and voting
